Jeremy Hunt pledges a ‘route to reduced taxes’

Mr Hunt’s Cabinet colleague, Penny Mordaunt, added to the pressure on the Prime Minister, stating that she is unapologetic about the need for the UK to reduce taxes. Speaking at the Centre for Policy Studies, Mr Hunt introduced a new “public sector productivity review,” which is expected to provide results by the autumn. The Chancellor believes that increasing the efficiency of the state will not only improve living standards but also drive economic growth. This approach would lead to higher tax revenues without raising tax rates, ultimately creating a sustainable path towards lower taxes. Mr Hunt also highlighted the success of Margaret Thatcher’s policies, including union reforms, privatizations, and support for competition, which resulted in lasting growth and productivity.

To carry out this review, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, John Glen, will challenge the public sector to find ways to do more with less. The review will explore areas such as digitization, artificial intelligence, better utilization of properties, and collaboration with the private sector.

Public sector encouraged to challenge itself

A Treasury source emphasized the importance of the public sector pushing itself to find better ways of evolving and adopting new delivery models rather than settling for marginal improvements. At the same conference, Penny Mordaunt expressed her support for reducing taxes and criticized the focus on culture wars, highlighting the significance of issues such as social care and housing.

The previous day, Sir Iain Duncan Smith and Sir John Redwood, both former Conservative leaders, urged the Prime Minister to present tax-cutting proposals to unite the party. A recent study revealed that council tax bills have increased by 79% in real terms since its introduction 30 years ago, with the average band D home now paying over £2,000.
