‘Jeopardy!’ Announces Significant Modifications in Response to Writer Strike

According to executive producer and showrunner Michael Davies, “Jeopardy!” will be resorting to a combination of previously written and recycled clues as a result of the ongoing writers strike in Hollywood. This measure will be implemented when the new season of the show begins in September. Davies explained during an episode of the show’s podcast “Inside Jeopardy!” that the material used will come from the strike-delayed database and multiple past seasons of the show. In addition, the upcoming season will feature a Second Chance Tournament with returning players from the 2020-21 season. This decision deviates from the usual format of introducing new contestants. Last year, a Second Chance Tournament was also held to give previous season’s players a chance at redemption.

Davies emphasized the importance of fairness and stated, “I believe, principally, that it would not be fair to have new contestants making their first appearance on the Alex Trebek Stage doing it with non-original material.” The writers of “Jeopardy!” are members of the Writers Guild of America West and have been on strike since May. The strike addresses issues of fair compensation, working conditions in the streaming era, and protections regarding the use of artificial intelligence.

As the strike continues, questions have arisen about how “Jeopardy!” will proceed. The show’s producers have faced criticism for not resolving the writers strike, which is approaching its 100th day. Several champions scheduled to participate in the show’s Tournament of Champions have announced their refusal to cross the WGA picket line. In response, the producers confirmed that the tournament would not take place until the strike is resolved.

The ABC primetime spinoff of “Jeopardy!” called “Celebrity Jeopardy!” will not be affected by the strike, as all the clues for the show were written before the strike began.

On a different note, some changes were announced by Davies on Monday. The second- and third-place prize amounts will be raised to $3,000 and $2,000, respectively, to accommodate the increased travel costs that contestants face due to the pandemic. Additionally, the eligibility period for potential contestants has been extended from 18 months to two years, allowing more time for individuals in the contestant pool to be called onto the show.

As the strike persists, the future of “Jeopardy!” remains uncertain. However, the show’s producers are taking steps to adapt and ensure the continuation of the beloved game show.
