Jeļena Ostapenko continued her undefeated streak against world No. 1 Iga Świątek as she defeated the defending US Open champion in the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows.
Ostapenko’s powerful gameplay proved too much for Świątek once again, as she won the match 3-6 6-3 6-1, extending her head-to-head record against Świątek to 4-0.
As the 20th seed in New York, Ostapenko hit 31 winners on her way to victory, putting an end to Świątek’s 75-week reign as world No. 1. Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka is poised to take over the top spot after the US Open.
Ostapenko commented, “I think the main thing is she doesn’t really like to play big hitters. She likes to have some time. When I play fast, aggressive, and powerful, she’s a little bit in trouble.”
Ostapenko added, “I always expect a tough battle against Iga, she is such a great player and very consistent… but I just went for it. I know I had to play my game and be aggressive because that is not what she likes.”
After losing the first set, Ostapenko dominated the match and quickly secured a remarkable 5-0 lead in the deciding third set.
Despite managing to avoid a bagel, Świątek couldn’t stop Ostapenko’s power and precision, ending her impressive unbeaten run at this year’s tournament.
