This idol’s on fire! In a shocking turn of events on the latest episode of “Survivor 45,” host Jeff Probst revealed that one contestant, Sabiyah Broderick of the Lulu tribe, set the wax-encased immunity idol ablaze during Tribal Council to save herself from elimination. Probst shared this incredible moment on the show’s podcast, aptly named “On Fire.”
During last week’s episode, Broderick, 28, found the idol but faced a minor setback when her tribe didn’t have enough flint to start a fire and secure the totem. However, Broderick proved to be resourceful and used the already burning fire at Tribal Council to her advantage. Speaking on the podcast, Probst admitted, “We never considered that somebody would find this idol and still not have fire, and then be smart enough to adapt and use the Tribal Council fire. When she puts it in the fire, yes, there is a part of me going, ‘This is fair, right?’”
Probst also revealed that there were no formal rules against using the fire, as all the note said was, “You’ve got to burn the wax.” Broderick later informed Entertainment Weekly that the entire process took about half an hour, turning the voting area into a spectacle that even caused Probst to pause and watch.
Acknowledging Broderick’s ingenuity, Probst commended her for using the only fire she had in her life – the fire at Tribal Council when she votes someone off – to achieve her goal. He found it fascinating that after accomplishing this amazing feat, Broderick was faced with the realization that the idol was only good for one Tribal Council, unless she sacrificed her vote once again.
According to Probst, this created great suspense and tension in the show’s unfolding drama. However, sadly for Broderick, her fellow competitors discovered her plans to betray them, leading to her elimination from the show. Reflecting on her decision, Broderick shared with EW, “Honestly, watching it, it looks like it was kind of a rash decision. But again, I was up there for way too long. I should have anticipated it being a multi-step idol. I didn’t, because there had been so many steps before [where] I’m thinking I’m opening the paper, ‘Hey girl, you got an idol!’”
Despite her elimination, Broderick praised the show’s editors for their skill in building anticipation and drama. She found the moment of realization, with “egg on her face,” perfectly executed and laughed along with the viewers. This is why “Survivor” continues to be a beloved show.
