Jeff McNeil of the Mets Hits Little League Home Run Due to Costly Red Sox Mistake

Jeff McNeil and the New York Mets have had a disappointing season so far, but they’re making the most of it. McNeil showed his skills with an impressive Little League-style inside-the-park home run during their game against the Boston Red Sox.

In the top of the fourth inning, with two runners in scoring position and the Mets trailing 2-0, McNeil stepped up to the plate and delivered a line drive up the middle. As he rounded third base, Pete Alonso was also racing towards home plate. However, Red Sox catcher Jorge Alfaro saw McNeil heading for second base and gave up on Alonso, allowing him to score easily. Alfaro then attempted to throw out McNeil, but his throw went astray, sailing into the outfield and rolling past center fielder Jarren Duran. This gave McNeil the opportunity to score standing up, giving the Mets a sudden lead.

“It was a fun moment,” McNeil said, reflecting on his rare inside-the-park home run. Despite McNeil’s impressive play, the Mets couldn’t hold on to their lead. Max Scherzer allowed four home runs and Trevor Gott gave up three earned runs in just one-third of an inning in relief, leading to an 8-3 victory for the Red Sox.

The Mets have been a disappointment this season, coming off a 101-win season and a high payroll. They currently sit at 46-52, far behind the Atlanta Braves in the division and the final wild card spot. McNeil, like many other members of the team, has struggled, with his batting average dropping to a career-low .248 from .326 last year.

The Mets now face decisions at the trade deadline. While it may be tough for them to go all-in, they have expiring contracts and an owner willing to invest in revamping their farm system. This could be a chance for them to rebuild and improve their performance in the long run.
