MIAMI, Aug. 3 (UPI) — During the Miami Marlins’ thrilling 9-8 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, burger sales experienced a remarkable surge of approximately 800%. This surge was attributed to a promotional sale introduced to celebrate the arrival of Jake Burger, the Marlins’ newest addition to their lineup.

In response to Jake Burger joining the team, the Marlins decided to honor him by offering fans $5 burgers at concession stands across loanDepot park. The impact of this promotion was evident, with the Marlins selling a staggering 2,100 burgers during the game.

To put this surge into context, on a regular Wednesday game day with a crowd of 32,000, the Marlins typically sell around 530 burgers. Thus, sales on Wednesday saw an impressive 800% increase compared to the average consumption on a Wednesday game day.

Since being traded to the Marlins, Burger made an immediate impact. In his debut game, the third baseman displayed exceptional performance, going 2 for 4 with a run scored and a walk, contributing to the Marlins’ thrilling comeback victory.

When asked about the burger promotion, Burger expressed his excitement, stating, “That was sweet. My wife took a picture in front of one of the signs. It’s awesome. I think it’s really cool the team put out a promotion like that for me.” This positive response reflects the appreciation Burger has for the support he received from the Marlins organization.

Aside from Burger, other trade acquisitions also made significant contributions to the Marlins’ victory. First baseman Josh Bell, who joined the team in the same trade, had an impressive performance, going 4 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored, and a walk. Furthermore, Marlins left fielder Jesus Sanchez sealed the win with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning.

In exchange for Burger, the Marlins traded minor league pitcher Jake Eder to the Chicago White Sox. Burger, drafted as the No. 11 overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, had a successful season with the White Sox, hitting .214 with a career-high 25 home runs and 52 RBIs in 88 games. Throughout his MLB career, Burger holds a .232 batting average with 34 home runs in 155 appearances.

The Marlins, currently with a record of 58-51, will face off against the Phillies (58-50) in the series finale at 12:10 p.m. EDT on Thursday in Miami.
