It’s high time we disregard the Coalition for the Homeless’ ineffective policy solutions

In a stunning display of audacity, the Coalition for the Homeless has criticized Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul for their alleged poor planning, ineffective strategies, lack of investment in proven solutions, and bureaucratic incompetence. However, it is not these factors that have brought the city’s shelter system to the brink of collapse, but rather the arrival of approximately 2,000 “asylum seekers” each week. These individuals, who have entered the country illegally, have caused the shelter population to nearly double, reaching over 100,000 individuals. While City Hall has certainly struggled to find effective solutions, it is hard to believe that the Coalition for the Homeless foresaw this issue when President Joe Biden opened the southern border. Additionally, any failure in planning cannot solely be attributed to the current administration, as one of the Coalition’s closest allies was responsible for city homeless policy for eight years prior to Adams taking office. If Steve Banks, the former head of this policy, left behind a contingency plan to double the city’s shelter capacity in case of an emergency, it must have been well-hidden. The real concern for the Coalition for the Homeless is the potential reopening of the Callahan consent decree, which grants the nonprofit organization significant power and financial gain. New York City’s “right to shelter” is based on court settlements reached with advocacy groups like the Coalition, which then receive taxpayer funds to meet the resulting requirements. Recently, the Coalition was awarded a $714,000 contract to provide supportive housing for the homeless with mental health and substance abuse issues. However, this approach has only exacerbated the city’s growing problem. The initial lawsuit in 1979 demanded just 750 beds, but the situation has escalated dramatically since then. While the migrant crisis may have some unintended positive consequences by forcing the political elite to reevaluate their approach, which has led to increased miserliness and failure over the past six decades, it will also expose the Coalition for the Homeless as a significant contributor to the problem at hand.
