ItalDesign Asso di Picche In Movimento: Reimagining the Iconic Giugiaro Concept

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic “Asso” series by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the legendary designer’s firm, ItalDesign, has reimagined the original Asso di Picche (Ace of Spades) as the Asso di Picche in Movimento (Ace of Spades in Motion). This concept car, described as an electric 2+2 coupe, measures 184 inches long, 77 inches wide, and 48 inches tall. The sleek design, crafted from aluminum and polycarbonate, features a unique silhouette that deviates from traditional layouts. The doors are double-hinged, reducing their size. Notable design elements include the headlights shaped like the “D” in the ItalDesign logo and the taillights with 13 bars of increasing width, also reflecting the logo.

The cabin of the Asso di Picche in Movimento preserves the original’s distinctive cylindrical dashboard, now spanning the width of the interior. The cylinder displays basic information, while an interface screen with additional functions can be rolled up or unrolled from the tube. The concept also pays homage to the original’s stylish leather straps as door pulls.

Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Asso di Picche was succeeded by the Asso di Quadri (Ace of Diamonds) in 1976, which used BMW 3-series mechanicals and later served as inspiration for the BMW M1. In 1979, the Asso di Fiori (Ace of Clubs) concept, developed with German coachbuilder Karmann, previewed the Isuzu Impulse, the only one of the three concepts to make it into production almost unchanged. Unfortunately, the Ace of Hearts never materialized.

Although the Asso di Picche in Movimento has no specific brand affiliation, ItalDesign became part of the VW Group in the 2010s through acquisitions by subsidiaries such as Audi and Lamborghini. While the concept currently exists only digitally, it is not difficult to imagine its presence as an EV show car at an upcoming auto show.
