Herzog stated, “I feel the BBC’s reporting is atrocious. The fact that it does not recognize Hamas as a terror organization requires a complete legal and public battle. It’s unbelievable.” He further described the brutality of Hamas, citing a booklet he had seen which instructed its terrorists to immediately torture innocent civilians upon abduction. He questioned, “What other type of torture do they want before they decide it was a terrorist organization?”
The BBC, in response, stated that it does not use the word “terrorist” but attributes it and acknowledges that Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization by the UK Government. The BBC’s editorial guidelines guide their approach to such terminology.
The BBC board addressed the ongoing scrutiny of its coverage and expressed its commitment to listening and reviewing its guidelines periodically. In a statement, the board recognized the “horror brought about by Hamas’s attack on defenseless civilians in Israel.” They acknowledged the ongoing deaths of innocent civilians on both sides and welcomed the scrutiny of their coverage.
Complaints and accusations of bias have been lodged against the BBC regarding its coverage of the conflict from both sides. The BBC has acknowledged these complaints and assured that they will be considered and debated during their upcoming planned review in the spring.
