Israeli military forces launched a targeted operation against Hamas early Wednesday morning inside Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital, where thousands of Palestinians have sought shelter. Recently, the hospital’s conditions have rapidly deteriorated due to a lack of fuel and ongoing fighting, which has led to a dire situation for patients and staff still inside.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, the operation was aimed at a specific area within the hospital. Although Israeli authorities have claimed that there is no indication of hostages inside the hospital, they have reported ongoing operations inside the facility.
The Israeli military’s actions at Al-Shifa have caused international concern over the treatment of Palestinians in Gaza. Additionally, allegations of Hamas using the hospital for military purposes have intensified the situation.
As a response to the Israeli push into the hospital, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has renewed calls for a ceasefire to prevent a humanitarian crisis. Inside the hospital, doctors have expressed fear and desperation as they attempt to provide care under the intense circumstances.
The situation at Al-Shifa has been further compounded by severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. Conditions are so dire that the hospital’s staff have had to resort to using a limited water supply and conducting procedures by candlelight.
In recent days, more than 100 UN staffers were killed in Gaza, making it the deadliest period in the United Nations’ history. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization has reported numerous attacks on health facilities and civilian shelters. With the situation continuing to deteriorate, there are growing concerns about the well-being of both patients and medical staff.
It remains to be seen how the international community will respond to the escalating situation in Gaza.
