GAZA, Nov 3 (Reuters) – Israel launched an attack on an ambulance in Gaza City on Friday, claiming it was carrying militants. However, health authorities in the Hamas-controlled enclave disputed this, stating that the ambulance was evacuating wounded individuals from the besieged north to the south of the territory.
According to Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesperson for the health ministry in Gaza, the ambulance was part of a convoy that Israel targeted as it was leaving al-Shifa Hospital. He mentioned that “a big number” of people were killed and wounded in the attack but did not provide specific figures.
Qidra added that the Israeli military targeted the convoy of ambulances in multiple locations, including at the gate of al-Shifa Hospital and at Ansar Square, which was approximately a kilometer away from the hospital.
The Israeli military stated that it identified and attacked an ambulance “being used by a Hamas terrorist cell” in the battle zone.
It claimed that several Hamas fighters were killed in the strike and accused the group of using ambulances to transport militants and weapons.
However, no evidence was provided to support the assertion that the ambulance was connected to Hamas. The Israeli military stated that it intended to release additional information to support their claim.
World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed his shock regarding the reports of attacks on ambulances evacuating patients. He emphasized the importance of protecting patients, health workers, and medical facilities in conflict areas.
