Israeli Start-Up Seeks Permission to Offer Lab-Grown Steaks on British Menus

Israeli start-up Aleph Farms has become the first company to apply for regulatory approval from the UK’s Food Standards Agency to sell lab-grown steaks in British restaurants. The steaks are cultivated from a single batch of cells taken from a cow in California and take about four weeks to grow. While it typically takes two years to receive approval, Aleph Farms plans to begin production in the UK within the next few years. The company’s first cut, the ‘Petit Steak’, was taken from a premium Black Angus cow named Lucy. Aleph Farms is in talks with potential commercial partners to bring its lab-grown steaks to the UK market.
