An Israeli reservist soldier is under investigation after allegedly shooting and killing a hero Jewish countryman who intervened in a deadly terror attack in Jerusalem. The soldier, a member of the Israel Defense Forces, had his weapons confiscated as part of the ongoing investigation.
The victim, Yuval Doron Castleman, 37, was fatally shot by the IDF reservist after successfully intervening in a terror attack at a bus stop last Thursday. Castleman, who was on his way to work, spotted two Hamas gunmen at the bus stop and stopped to help the victims after they had fatally shot three Israeli civilians, including a pregnant woman and a rabbinical judge.
Video footage revealed that Castleman had thrown his weapon down and put his hands in the air, calling out for the soldiers not to shoot as soon as the IDF arrived at the scene. However, one of the off-duty reservists, accused of being part of a radical group known for attacking Palestinians, allegedly shot and killed Castleman despite his efforts.
Castleman, who died just before his 38th birthday, was praised for his bravery and heroism in confronting the terrorists. The IDF expressed sorrow for his death and launched an investigation into the shooting. Castleman’s family is demanding answers and referred to his death as an “execution.”
The incident has sparked controversy and criticism, with political figures and officials weighing in on the tragedy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initially underscored the importance of armed civilians in preventing larger disasters but later revised his stance, calling Castleman a “hero of Israel” and expressing condolences to his family.
