Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Urges Swift Deportations Following Eritrean Protests

In the aftermath of a violent riot in Tel Aviv, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Sunday that “a red line” had been crossed, and announced a new initiative to deport all immigrants who do not have authorization to be in Israel. The riot resulted in approximately 170 injuries from clashes with the police and fighting between supporters and opponents of the Eritrean regime on Saturday. The government reported that nearly 50 officers were also injured. Netanyahu expressed a desire for strict measures against the rioters and instructed a group of ministers to develop a comprehensive plan for the removal of African migrants who are deemed “illegal infiltrators.”

This announcement by the prime minister reignited the ongoing debate surrounding the thousands of immigrants who have arrived in Israel over the past twenty years, primarily from Eritrea and Sudan seeking asylum. Some leaders have previously advocated for deportation, voicing concerns that the presence of more immigrants may undermine Israel’s Jewish majority. Conversely, others argue that as a nation founded by refugees, Israel should provide support to individuals fleeing oppression and hardship in other countries, including Eritrea. Netanyahu, who has proposed divisive changes to Israel’s judiciary, attributes previous failed deportation attempts to the Supreme Court’s obstruction. (Read more Israel stories.)
