The Israeli Defense Ministry has introduced a revolutionary surveillance aircraft that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) systems, according to officials. Brig. Gen. Yaniv Rotem, head of military research and development in the Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D) of the Ministry of Defense, stated that the “Oron” mission aircraft will enhance the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. The advanced systems installed on a Gulfstream G550 jet by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) include cutting-edge sensors and radars, as well as data processing and AI capabilities. The aircraft, known as “Oron,” can track targets over long distances and in various weather conditions. Test flights are currently underway, and it will later integrate with the 122nd Squadron. IDF personnel will be trained to expedite full operational readiness. Israeli cyber and AI expert Brig. Gen. Uri Engelhard highlighted the value of integrating AI with big data and sensors, noting its ability to gather and analyze vast amounts of information in real-time. Engelhard stressed the importance of staying ahead in AI technology due to the fact that many groups, including terrorists, are also seeking to leverage AI capabilities. However, he cautioned against relying solely on AI recommendations without considering human decision-making and common sense.
