Iran’s Aggressive Tactics: A Losing Strategy
Opinion piece by Rebecca Grant
The recent surge in anti-Israel protests and harassment attacks orchestrated by Iran’s Axis of Resistance has the mullahs in Iran feeling triumphant. Esmail Ghaani, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds force, has been fervently traveling to Lebanon and other locations to fuel more chaos and unrest. The ultimate goal? To eradicate the U.S. military influence in the Middle East and assert Iran’s dominance in the region.
However, Iran’s tactics may be backfiring. Despite their aspirations for regional hegemony, Iran finds itself holding a weak hand.
Not only are Iran’s military options limited, but its economy is also in disarray. Moreover, many governments in the region are determined to contain Iran’s influence. The aftermath of the recent Gaza crisis has only exacerbated Iran’s predicament.
Iran has flooded the region with an overwhelming number of missiles, aiming to overwhelm Israel’s Iron Dome missile defenses. As highlighted by the national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, Iran is deeply involved in providing support and capabilities to Hamas. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been actively arming, funding, and training militias in multiple countries, including Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, the West Bank, and Gaza. Despite the significant investment of time and resources, Iran’s proxies are unable to outmatch U.S. deterrent forces.
