Is Twitter’s Brand New Logo Causing Concerns?

It appears that Elon Musk’s attempt to rebrand Twitter with the letter “X” may face legal challenges. Insider reports that rival company Meta holds the trademark for an “X” logo in the context of online social networking services, entertainment, gaming, and application development. While the logos of the two companies look different, Musk’s use of the “X” for his social network could lead to issues.

Microsoft also holds a trademark for the letter “X” related to its Xbox gaming system, and the Twitter logo bears resemblance to a generic Unicode character and the lowercase “x” in the Monotype font. Trademark attorney Josh Gerben predicts that Twitter is likely to face lawsuits from various parties, as there are nearly 900 active registrations for similar trademarks in the US. However, the complexities of intellectual property suggest that Musk’s “X” might not infringe trademarks if it is used by companies in different industries and doesn’t cause confusion.

Both Microsoft and Meta hold trademarks for the use of the letter “X” in social media and communications purposes, creating potential challenges for Musk. In a separate incident, police briefly halted the removal of Twitter’s old logo at its San Francisco headquarters due to a possible lack of permit, but no crime was committed. Additionally, Twitter has changed its response to media inquiries, opting for a more professional message rather than a poop emoji. (Read more Twitter stories.)
