The State of the NFL: A Decline in Offense and Quarterback Play
When it comes to self-promotion, the NFL is unparalleled. From passionate fans to fantasy football mania, the league has built a marketing empire. However, this season has been lackluster in terms of offensive performance and particularly disappointing when it comes to quarterbacks.
One of the greatest players in NFL history, Tom Brady, recently expressed his disappointment with the current state of football. He criticized the coaching, player development, and overall game schemes, and he’s not entirely wrong. Especially with the exit of veteran quarterbacks like Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, and Philip Rivers, the league is now relying on inexperienced young quarterbacks to fill their shoes.
With an unprecedented number of first-year quarterbacks starting games this season, the NFL is struggling to maintain the level of entertainment it once provided. The absence of iconic matchups like Brady vs. Rodgers or Manning vs. Brees has left fans longing for the emergence of new rivalries, such as Mahomes vs. Hurts or Burrow vs. Jackson. However, at the moment, it feels like we’re still a few years away from witnessing these new generational battles.

Many struggling quarterbacks are dealing with inexperienced and ineffective playcallers, hindering their development. As a result, the league is experiencing a decline in scoring, with the average points per game dropping for the fourth consecutive season.
Defensive innovation has also played a role in limiting offensive production. Several coaches have turned to college tactics to disrupt quarterbacks, leading to more sophisticated defensive strategies. As a result, young quarterbacks are facing challenges in deciphering these advanced defenses, making it harder for them to find success in the NFL.
Injuries to key players and the failure of offensive lines to keep up with dominant pass rushers have further contributed to the decline in scoring and overall watchability of the NFL. While the league still boasts some outstanding talent and exciting matchups, the current state of the NFL is undeniably a letdown compared to its past glory.
