Is the true meaning of Independence Day, July 4, well understood by Americans?

Two-thirds of Americans lack a true understanding of what Independence Day signifies.

This revelation comes from a recent study conducted by OnePoll, which tested the knowledge of 1,000 US respondents, all of whom identified as either born or naturalized citizens of the United States.

When asked about the official significance of July 4th, only 59% correctly identified it as “The signing of the Declaration of Independence.”

While the remaining 41% didn’t answer correctly, 22% came close by choosing “The establishment of the United States as an independent nation.”

Similarly, only 45% acknowledged that the first organized celebration of independence occurred in 1777, a year after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

The Pennsylvania Evening Post reported that the event included a grand fireworks display and the illumination of the city at night.

Regarding other topics covered in the survey, many respondents demonstrated solid knowledge of US history and Civics, correctly answering questions that are commonly found in the US Citizenship Test.

A noteworthy 82% identified the President as the “Commander in Chief” of the military, and a similar percentage recognized the “Star Spangled Banner” as the National Anthem.

However, some basic civics concepts eluded certain respondents. Only 65% knew that there are nine members in the Supreme Court, which is currently in session.

Furthermore, 40% incorrectly believed that the “right to bear arms” is part of the first amendment, while 11% falsely claimed that “freedom of speech” is not included in the first amendment at all.

Prior to taking the test, only 61% considered themselves highly knowledgeable about US history. However, after completing the survey, 73% felt confident in their abilities, believing they had answered most or all of the questions correctly.
