Fricker expresses her admiration for her children’s current school, but acknowledges the possibility of exploring more affordable alternatives.
“At the moment, we’re paying approximately £1,200 per month in fees. However, during the middle-school years, this cost is expected to increase to around £25,000 per year after tax. Despite our privilege, we still have to make sacrifices. We started saving early to cope with this financial strain,” she explains.
“One thought that crosses my mind is hiring some of the most brilliant tutors to teach my kids. This option would be far more cost-effective than private school fees,” she adds.
Another parent, who prefers to remain anonymous, shares her experience of having to enroll her child in a private school due to health issues and the local state school being at full capacity.
While the fees pose a challenge, she feels left with no other choice as state schools are under immense pressure.
“My son requires lifelong medical assistance, and as a single parent with no local family, I had no other option. I went through the application process for a local state school, but unfortunately, we were not offered a place. The reason being that particular year had a high number of special education needs and sibling places, which resulted in the school operating at full capacity,” she explains.
“Fortunately, I am receiving financial aid from a bursary fund. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to afford the school fees,” she adds.
“I didn’t have the privilege of attending private school myself, and I strongly believe that quality state education should be accessible to everyone. In an ideal world, private schools wouldn’t be necessary or exist. However, I consider myself fortunate to have the choice, and I carefully make the decision each year with my son based on what suits us best,” she concludes.
