‘Is Still Not Over His Ex’

Elon Musk ignited a firestorm of criticism on social media when he revealed his decision to rebrand Twitter’s iconic blue bird logo to a generic “X” logo. The announcement was met with mixed reviews, with users and prominent figures expressing their thoughts on the controversial move.

Irish YouTuber Jacksepticeye humorously remarked, “Elon Musk hasn’t gotten over his X,” while the account @HighYieldHarry suggested the name “Twitter X” as a cleaner alternative. Comic book writer Dan Slott drew a parallel between the new logo and the X icon used to close windows on computers.

Channel 4, a British broadcasting network, playfully commented on the challenge of rebranding by referring to people still calling their streaming service 4OD, a name they abandoned several years ago. Comedian Mark Watson took a more critical stance, suggesting Musk should change not only the name and logo but also his own identity due to the damage caused to the brand.

Former GOP congressman Joe Walsh light-heartedly pointed out that Musk was free to change the name to X, but he would still call it Twitter. However, Gary Black, co-founder of the Future Fund, expressed concern about losing Twitter’s brand equity by rebranding to X. He questioned how the change would impact advertisers and their perception of the platform.

Others, like Albert Bridge Capital founder Drew Dickson and Meta-owned Threads, voiced their confusion and skepticism regarding Musk’s decision, viewing it as detrimental to the brand’s value and potentially alienating to advertisers.

Musk’s move to rebrand Twitter to X is part of his larger strategy to attract advertisers and increase revenue after facing challenges with content moderation and declining income since acquiring the company. This decision follows Musk’s vision to turn Twitter into an “accelerant to creating X, the everything app.”

Musk’s interest in creating a “super app” similar to WeChat in China, which offers a variety of services, has driven his ambition for Twitter’s transformation. Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino emphasized that X represents the future of limitless interactivity, powered by AI and enabling global connections.

Despite the controversy surrounding the rebranding, Musk welcomed negative feedback, preferring it over censorship. His profile picture on Twitter now reflects the platform’s new logo.
