Is it Time for McConnell to Resign?

Some Republican senators have raised concerns about changes in Mitch McConnell’s behavior since he had a concussion and broken rib from a fall in March. These concerns grew on Wednesday when McConnell froze for about 20 seconds during a press conference without offering an explanation. Dr. Sanjay Gupta has speculated about the possibility of a petit mal seizure or a mini stroke. However, McConnell’s office addressed these concerns on Friday by confirming his intention to serve as the GOP leader for the 118th Congress, as reported by CNN. Republican Senator John Cornyn expressed his support, stating, “I don’t know how much longer he will want to serve, but I support him as long as he wants the job,” according to NBC News.

According to Michael Zona, a former communications director of Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, there are several qualified contenders who are patiently waiting for the opportunity to lead. Newsweek reports that Senate Minority Whip John Thune and John Barrasso, chair of the Senate Republican Conference, are among the primary candidates to replace McConnell. McConnell, who has been in Congress since 1985 and has led the GOP since 2007, has not revealed his plans beyond early 2025 when the next Congress begins. He is not up for reelection until 2026.

However, McConnell has reportedly experienced multiple falls this year. Since his fall in March, there have been instances where he appeared to have difficulty hearing and responding to questions from reporters, according to NBC. An unnamed GOP senator suggests that McConnell may be having trouble processing information rather than simply hearing it. During closed-door meetings, Thune and Barrasso have often stepped in for McConnell, especially in recent weeks, as he speaks less frequently. The senator believes it may be time for McConnell to step down and hopes he does so in a dignified manner for the sake of his legacy and reputation. GOP Senator Cynthia Lummis, on the other hand, fully supports McConnell, describing him as “the same old pithy, smart Mitch McConnell.”
