Question: Does HMSA continue to provide reimbursement for the purchase of COVID-19 home test kits? If so, what is the process for reimbursement?

Answer: The Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA) will reimburse members of commercial plans for COVID-19 test kits purchased between January 15, 2022 (the start of the federal mandate) and May 11, 2023 (the expiration of the federal public health emergency for COVID-19). Reimbursement requests must be submitted online within one year of the purchase date, as stated on the HMSA website. Tests purchased after May 12, 2023, are not eligible for reimbursement.

To seek payment for COVID-19 test kits purchased during the eligible period, commercial, EUTF, and self-insured members can visit hmsa.com and log in to their online HMSA account. If you don’t have an online account, you can create one by clicking on “Member Login” on the website. If you are eligible, HMSA will reimburse you up to $12 per authorized COVID-19 test, with a maximum of eight tests per month. When filling out the online form, you will need to upload your receipt and a photo of the UPC bar code from the test kit. For detailed instructions, visit 808ne.ws/hmsare.

Please note that different reimbursement rules apply to members of Fed 87, the HMSA plan for individuals eligible for the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. The website states that HMSA will continue to reimburse Fed 87 members for the price of OTC at-home COVID-19 tests, including shipping and sales tax, up to $12 per test. Members can be reimbursed for up to eight tests per month, provided that the tests are authorized, cleared, or approved by the FDA.

Question: Can bicycles be taken on the Skyline trains?

Answer: Yes, you can bring bicycles onto the Skyline trains. The Honolulu Department of Services’ website, which provides information about Oahu’s new rail-transit service, states that bike racks are available inside the elevated rail cars near the doors. If a rail car’s bike rack is full, riders should hold onto their bikes and ensure that the bikes do not obstruct walking paths for other passengers or mobility devices.

Limited service for the Skyline is scheduled to begin on June 30.

Question: Will Manoa Falls Trail be closed on the Fourth of July?

Answer: No, assuming that the scheduled maintenance work is completed on time, the popular Honolulu trail will be open as usual on the Fourth of July. According to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, the trail will be closed from Monday to June 30 for maintenance and is scheduled to reopen on July 1. The trail receives approximately 200,000 visitors annually, and due to the foot traffic and rainy weather in the area, regular repairs are necessary to address trail erosion.

We would like to express our gratitude to a volunteer at the Friends of the Library of Hawaii Book Sale. On Father’s Day, my wife and I attended the sale to find children’s books for our 4-month-old grandson. While waiting in line to have our bill totaled, a volunteer noticed me holding my walking cane and bag of books and expressed concern. She took us to a separate table and manually calculated the total amount for our books. She thanked us for supporting Hawaii’s public libraries and informed us that we could return in the following days. After calculating the total, she directed us to an available cashier. This act of kindness went above and beyond our expectations, especially because it was Father’s Day. Unfortunately, we did not catch her name. Every year, the volunteers at the book sale are incredibly helpful, but this particular volunteer truly stood out. Once again, thank you.

Please note that the annual book sale will be ongoing at Ward Village, 1142 Auahi St., until Sunday.
