Irvine Welsh Attributes Influence of Edinburgh’s ‘Verbal Culture’ on His Writing

Irvine Welsh, the renowned author of Trainspotting, spoke about his latest film Choose Irvine Welsh at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. He described the film as a “tribute” to his friends around the world and discussed how his upbringing in Leith and his time spent in Edinburgh influenced his storytelling.

Welsh, who divides his time between London, Miami, and Edinburgh, compared the verbal culture of Edinburgh to the visual culture of Miami. He explained that the constant “blether” in Edinburgh inspired his writing, while the narcissistic nature of Miami influenced his perception of the city.

In addition to his writing, Welsh also referred to himself as a “renaissance man” as he dabbles in various creative mediums. He produces novels, short stories, plays, films, and is now venturing into musicals, with a Trainspotting version set to premiere next year.

Choose Irvine Welsh, directed by Ian Jefferies, features many of Welsh’s friends, including Iggy Pop, Bobby Gillespie, and Martin Compston. Welsh described the documentary as an “extended tribute” to his friends all over the world. However, he admitted to feeling some trepidation about seeing himself on the big screen.

Welsh also mentioned that this year marks the 30th anniversary of his iconic novel, Trainspotting, but downplayed its significance. He emphasized that as a writer, he is always focused on his current work and hopes that people enjoy what he produces. Trainspotting was commercially successful, but Welsh believes its true meaning lies in its exploration of a world without paid work rather than its depiction of drugs or youth.

Despite his diverse range of creations, Welsh revealed that poetry is one format he tends to avoid. He humorously recounted how he used to write romantic poems for girls in the school playground, but it has never been his preferred medium.

Lastly, Welsh mentioned that he still enjoys attending raves, albeit less frequently. He recently DJed at a festival in Buckinghamshire and got lost in the music and atmosphere. Although it’s not a regular occurrence, Welsh indulges in the rave scene when the opportunity arises.

Choose Irvine Welsh is the first of two documentaries by Welsh, with another one scheduled for release next year.
