Last year, some Republican lawmakers expressed concern that increased funding for the IRS would lead to a higher number of audits for middle-class Americans. However, the Biden administration has stated that audit rates will not change for individuals earning less than $400,000. Additionally, false claims circulated on social media alleging that the IRS planned to arm its agents, causing fear among taxpayers.
The IRS has now confirmed that it will no longer conduct unannounced visits, a practice that has been in place for decades. Instead, taxpayers will receive mailed letters to schedule meetings.
IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel stated, “We are reevaluating how the IRS operates in order to better serve taxpayers and the nation. This change is a logical step that will increase confidence in our tax administration and improve the overall safety of taxpayers and IRS employees.”
The National Treasury Employees Union, which represents Treasury workers, expressed support for the new policy. The union highlighted the “dangerous situations” faced by IRS Field Collection employees and called for improved security.
NTEU National President Tony Reardon added, “It is unacceptable that civil servants in our country live in fear simply because they have chosen a career in public service.”
