Ireland Captivated Me: Artist’s Van Trip Evolves into a Thriving ‘Art Studio on Wheels’

Kathryn Johnson, 27, originally from Strathaven, decided to permanently embrace a nomadic lifestyle after realizing the financial benefits of living in her €6,330 Ford Transit van. Her monthly expenses, including food and fuel, now total just €575. Kathryn purchased the van in July 2020 and fell in love with the beauty and peace of Ireland during a visit, deciding to make it her permanent base. She spends her days traveling along the west coast, engaging in activities such as surfing, swimming, and pursuing her artistic craft. Kathryn has transformed her van into an “art studio on wheels,” complete with a desk, storage for materials, and solar panels for self-sufficiency. Although van life may not be as glamorous as portrayed on Instagram, Kathryn highly recommends it to others and has no plans to give up her nomadic lifestyle.
