Iranian President’s Wife Reveals Reason Behind Hijab Law: A Respectful Move for Women, with Violators Facing 10-Year Prison Terms

The wife of Iran’s president, Jamileh Alamolhoda, defended the country’s new hijab law in an interview with ABC “This Week” host Martha Raddatz. The law imposes heavier penalties for women who refuse to wear the mandatory Islamic headscarf in public, as well as for business owners who serve women not wearing a hijab and activists who organize against it.

Alamolhoda stated that the law is being implemented “out of respect for women” and compared it to dress codes in other countries. She emphasized that hijab was traditionally a religiously mandated tradition that has now been turned into a law. Violators of the law could face up to 10 years in prison.

When asked about the punishment for not wearing a hijab, Alamolhoda stated that she does not specialize in law and cannot answer on a professional level. She mentioned that punishments are dispensed for breaking the law in many countries.

The interview took place shortly after the anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, a woman who was detained for violating Iran’s dress code and died in police custody. More women have been openly defying the hijab law following Amini’s death. However, the government has cracked down on dissent, resulting in numerous deaths and detentions.

Alamolhoda disputed the United Nations’ figures on the number of people killed and detained during the protests. She claimed that the protests were turned into political projects by foreign governments, blaming the United States. When asked if anyone was killed or executed due to the protests, Alamolhoda acknowledged that many were killed but claimed it was in defense of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Alamolhoda also disputed claims that Amini was beaten while in custody, stating that she had pre-existing conditions and was loved by everyone. Amini’s family strongly disputes this explanation for her death.

In a fiery speech to the United Nations, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi called for the United States to choose the right path and stated that old powers are on a downward trajectory while Iran represents the future.
