Iran Confronts Australian Envoy on Sanctions and Human Rights Investigations

Iran has summoned the Australian envoy to the Middle East in response to the latest round of sanctions imposed on Tehran. The Iranian state media reported on Thursday that the chargé d’affaires from Australia was called in to the foreign ministry over accusations of human rights violations and “interventionist remarks” by Australia. The new sanctions are specifically targeting four Iranian nationals.

Interestingly, this development comes at a significant time, as Iranians are currently commemorating the first anniversary of nationwide protests against the mandatory headscarf law. The protests were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was allegedly detained by Iran’s morality police for not wearing the hijab.

These demonstrations have posed a considerable challenge to Iran’s theocracy, marking one of the most significant threats since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. In response to the protests, security forces cracked down, resulting in over 500 deaths and more than 22,000 detentions.

The Iranian government has accused the West of inciting the unrest that led to the protests. In response, Australia has imposed financial sanctions and travel bans on four individuals and three entities in Iran, citing their responsibility for the oppression of people in the country, particularly women and girls.

Among those targeted by the sanctions are Iran’s cyber police, Press TV (the English-language state TV channel), and Iran’s police spokesman, Saeed Montazer Almehdi.

It is not uncommon for Iran to summon Western envoys to protest against similar remarks or actions.
