July 21 (UPI) — An Iowa man’s mission to set a Guinness World Record for the largest pencil collection reached its pinnacle as his 69,255 unique writing instruments were meticulously counted at an esteemed Iowa museum.
Aaron Bartholmey, a 36-year-old resident of Colfax, ambitiously transported his extensive pencil collection to the Colfax Historical Society museum, where it underwent an official tally performed in accordance with the rigorous guidelines set by Guinness World Records.
Bartholmey and his collection of 69,255 pencils aspire to surpass the current record holder, Emilio Arenas, who gained acclaim in May 2020 with his collection of 24,026 pencils.
Bartholmey’s fascination with pencils originated when his first-grade teacher gifted each student a vibrant pencil for Christmas. Eventually, he began acquiring pencils from antique stores and flea markets, leading to the formation of his diverse collection.
Among the assortment are historic commemorative pencils dating back over a century, promotional pencils, vintage telephonic dialing pencils, and sport-themed pencils featuring team schedules.
“I’ve always been captivated by the narratives encapsulated within these writing instruments,” expressed Bartholmey in an interview with The Washington Post. “My collection goes beyond the ordinary No. 2 pencils.”
Bartholmey anticipates receiving notification from Guinness World Records officials regarding the validation of his record-breaking endeavor within the next three months.
