Investigation Launched by U.S. into Complaints of Steering Issues Raised by Tesla Drivers

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched another investigation into safety issues with Tesla vehicles. This time, they are looking into twelve complaints about loss of steering control or power steering in the 2023 Models 3 and Y electric vehicles. The probe covers approximately 280,000 vehicles. Five drivers reported not being able to steer their vehicles at all, while seven others experienced a loss of power steering that required more effort to steer.

Although there was one report of a crash, no injuries have been reported. According to the NHTSA, loss of steering control may be accompanied by messages to drivers indicating reduced or disabled power steering assist. Investigators will examine the frequency of the issue, manufacturing processes, and its severity.

Fifth probe in three years

This investigation marks the fifth time in three years that the NHTSA has launched a probe into Tesla vehicles. In February, they sent a special crash investigation team to examine a crash in Northern California involving a Tesla potentially operating on an automated driving system. The driver was killed, and a passenger was critically injured. The probe is part of a larger investigation into instances of Teslas on Autopilot crashing into parked emergency vehicles, suspension failures, steering wheel issues, and improperly connected front seat belts.

AP News reached out to Tesla for comment but has not received a response at the time of writing.
