Introducing a New Internet Term: IJBOL

Introducing IJBOL, the latest addition to the internet’s collection of laughing terms. It comes after LOL, ROFL, and LMAO. Mashable dubbed it the “summer’s ironic term,” and now the New York Times is catching up with this trend. Shirley Wang writes that the “internet wants to revitalize laughing online with a new term.” Interestingly, ijbol was added to the Urban Dictionary in 2009 but remained relatively unknown until it gained popularity in K-pop forums last year. Elena Cavender says it has now broken free from fandom and niche circles and has become mainstream.

KnowYourMeme traces the first viral tweet featuring the phrase back to 2021, but it has become more prevalent this year. The Times reports that Gen Z-ers are particularly fond of this term, considering the earlier expressions as outdated. According to college student Sebastian Champagne, “My friends, we’re all around the same age, like 18 to early 20s. So a lot of us were like, ‘This is going to be our word now!'” However, Michelle McSweeney, a professor at City University of New York, suggests that explaining the term in a newspaper article might actually diminish its popularity.
