International Chess Federation Implements Restriction on Transgender Females Participating in Women’s Events

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has implemented a new rule stating that transgender women are prohibited from participating in official FIDE events for females until their gender transition has been assessed by officials. FIDE acknowledges that they have been receiving an increasing number of recognition requests from players who identify as transgender. The eligibility of transgender women to compete will now depend on a thorough analysis of each individual case, which may take up to two years.

FIDE emphasized the significance of gender transition, stating that it has a profound impact on a player’s status and future eligibility for tournaments. Therefore, players must provide relevant proof of their gender change before it can be officially recognized. In the case of a male-to-female transition, the player is not allowed to participate in official FIDE events for women until a decision is made by the FIDE Council. This decision will be based on further analysis and must be reached within a maximum period of two years. However, there are no restrictions for individuals who have transitioned to play in the open section.

The federation also stated that if a titleholder of a women’s title undergoes a gender transition to male, their titles will be abolished. However, if the person decides to transition back to female, there is a possibility of reinstating their titles.

This ruling comes during the hosting of the World Cup event in Azerbaijan, where renowned chess players such as World No. 1 Grand Master Magnus Carlsen are in attendance.

It is important to note that FIDE still holds open competitions that allow all players to participate, as well as specialized categories for women, young players, and computers.

In conclusion, FIDE’s new ruling aims to address the increasing number of recognition requests from transgender players and ensure fair competition. The federation recognizes the impact of gender transition on a player’s eligibility and seeks to make informed decisions based on individual assessments.
