Instagram Drama Erupts Due to Mislabeling of ‘Vintage’ on a 1999 Rug

  • An influencer purchased a mystery “vintage” rug at a flea market.
  • However, she was disappointed to discover that the rug was actually from the 1990s.
  • Instagrammers are now debating whether the 90s can be considered a vintage period.

An influencer has sparked a passionate debate about the authenticity of the “vintage rug” she purchased, as it was revealed to be from 1999.

On June 23, Ashley Dusing, an Instagrammer known as tinyhouseontenby, shared a video on Instagram showing her unwrapping the rug she bought at a flea market. In the caption, she explained that she took a chance on the item after being told it had been stored for decades.

During the video, Dusing was initially excited, but her enthusiasm turned to disappointment when she saw the label indicating that the rug was manufactured in 1999.

Dusing expressed her dilemma regarding the vintage status of the rug, questioning if a rug from 1999 could be considered vintage. She ultimately decided to remove the rug from her floor.

The video received significant attention, with over 488,000 views and more than 900 comments discussing whether the 90s can be considered a vintage period, as well as whether Dusing should have known better.

One viewer commented that vintage items are typically considered to be 20 years old or older, supporting the categorization of the rug as vintage. However, others argued that Dusing shouldn’t have expected the rug to be older and should appreciate its design regardless of its age.

The definition of “vintage” doesn’t have a universally agreed cut-off date. According to online marketplace Vestiaire Collective, anything older than 15 years can be considered vintage, while vintage clothes retailer Thrifted sells items from the 1990s and 2000s in the vintage category.

In her own comment, Dusing mentioned that she spent $23 on the rug, loved the colors, but wasn’t a fan of the flower pattern.

Interestingly, some viewers realized that they were now considered “old” as their decade of birth, such as the 90s, was being labeled as vintage. This sparked humorous responses acknowledging this shift in perspective.

This isn’t the first time the term “vintage” has caused controversy. TikToker Sarah Dunk went viral after finding a Versace dress from 1992 at a thrift store, leading some millennials to be surprised by the use of the term.

Dusing has a following of over 68,300 on her Instagram account, where she shares interior design insights and renovation updates.
