SEOUL, Oct. 17 (UPI) — According to a senior official from Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, North Korea is suspected of supplying arms to Hamas and collaborating with the militant faction on training and tactics that have the potential to be used in a surprise attack on South Korea. The official also stated that Hamas is believed to have direct or indirect ties to North Korea in various areas such as weapons trade, tactical guidance, and training.

The official added, “There is a possibility that North Korea could use Hamas’ attack methods for a surprise invasion of South Korea.”

South Korea’s Defense Ministry has confirmed these comments to international media.

Recent reports have identified Hamas fighters using F-7 rocket-propelled grenade launchers, which the official revealed are also known as the North’s RPG-7 launcher. Moreover, North Korean-made 122mm multiple rocket launchers were provided to an armed group associated with Hamas, and artillery shells marked “Bang-122,” the same as ammunition used by North Korea, were found on the Israel-Gaza border.

Israeli Ambassador to South Korea, Akiva Tor, stated that he believes Hamas is using North Korean weapons in its attacks on Israel.

North Korea has consistently faced accusations of supplying arms to Hamas. However, Pyongyang denied these allegations, calling them “groundless and false.”

The tactics employed by Hamas in its surprise attack on Israel exhibit similarities to the “asymmetric attack pattern” that South Korea expects from North Korea. The official highlighted Hamas’ use of a large-scale rocket launch, commercial drones, and motorized paragliders to infiltrate Israel. It is believed that North Korea may have shared this know-how with Hamas.

South Korea is actively analyzing the failures of the Israeli early warning system to deter the Hamas attacks and is collaborating closely with the United States to enhance surveillance of North Korea and strengthen defense capabilities. The country is developing its own Iron Dome-style system called the Low Altitude Missile Defense system, or LAMD, which is expected to be deployed by 2026.
