Judge and Trump lawyers engage in a heated debate over motion for a mistrial
Donald Trump’s legal team is seeking a mistrial motion, sparking a lengthy argument with Judge Arthur Engoron regarding the mention of his clerk, which is subject to a gag order.
“We need to refer to the subject matter,” stated Trump’s attorney Chris Kise.
Initially, Engoron advised Trump’s lawyers against filing a motion that involved his staff, citing the gag order’s purpose of safeguarding them.
“I am completely convinced that you have no right to complain about my confidential communications,” Engoron affirmed.
Trump’s attorneys, who have expressed concerns about Engoron’s communication with his clerk, argue that it indicates bias in the trial and have requested Engoron to reconsider.
Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, informed the judge, “It is clear that we will be moving for a mistrial, as it is part of our plan.”
“We need a chance to be heard on the matters that haven’t been addressed yet,” Habba emphasized.
After consulting with his clerk, Engoron reversed his decision and allowed Trump’s attorneys to submit a written motion.
Once an agreement was reached, Engoron jokingly remarked, “See, I knew it would be a love fest.”
Meanwhile, Trump sat back in his chair at the defense table during the exchange.
