The release of newly detailed US Census data provides insights into the racial and ethnic breakdowns of Americans. Among the declining white population, one-third identify as English, while just half of the black population identify as African American.

This data was released more than three years after the 2020 census due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and new confidentiality protection methods.

While previous census data disclosed the straightforward count of Americans in different racial categories, this new information delves into the ethnic breakdowns of these populations.

The black population, which has grown by 5.5% since 2010 according to previous data, consists primarily of African Americans. However, only 24.5 million out of the 46.9 million black census respondents listed themselves as African American. The remaining half selected backgrounds such as Jamaican, Haitian, Nigerian, and Ethiopian.

Less represented groups include those identifying as Congolese, Somali, Liberian, and Haitian.

The most commonly selected detailed ethnic group among the white population is English, with 46.5 million Americans identifying as entirely or partially English. Close behind is the subcategory of German, with 45 million white Americans. Additionally, nearly 39 million identify as Irish.

The Hispanic population of the US has seen a significant increase in Venezuelans. The population has grown from 215,000 to over 605,000 between 2010 and 2020 due to economic and humanitarian crises in Venezuela. Temporary Protected Status has been granted to many Venezuelans in the US, valid until at least March of next year.

Mexicans continue to be the largest Hispanic group in the US with a population of nearly 36 million. However, their percentage share among the Hispanic and Latino population has declined from 63% in 2010 to 57% in 2020.

The Asian population in the US, totaling around 20 million, identifies with various subsets of the category. Chinese-Americans make up the largest group with over 5.2 million, followed by Indians with 4.7 million, Filipinos with 4.4 million, and Vietnamese with 2.2 million.
