Inside LAPD Investigation: Controversy Surrounding Assistant Chief Shakes Department

An LAPD assistant chief, Al Labrada, is currently under internal investigation following allegations made by an LAPD officer with whom he had a romantic relationship. The officer accused Labrada of using an Apple AirTag to track her movements. This report was published on Thursday.

After the woman filed a police report in Ontario last week, Labrada had his city phone confiscated. Sources, who wish to remain anonymous, revealed this information to the Los Angeles Times.

The woman claimed that she found an AirTag, a small tracking device, among her belongings.

When contacted by The Times, Labrada declined to comment. However, his attorney, Jeremy Tissot, issued a statement on his behalf. The statement emphasized Labrada’s denial of all allegations, deeming them completely false.

“We fully expect Labrada to be proven innocent. He’s considering all possible legal action against those responsible for these false and defamatory claims,” the statement read.

An LAPD spokeswoman confirmed that the department was investigating a “crime report involving the actions of AC Labrada”. However, she declined to provide further details. Capt. Kelly Muniz, the commanding officer of the Media Relations Division, stated that Labrada would remain in his current position.

According to two sources familiar with the case, the female officer suspected Labrada to be behind the AirTag as he was the only one with access to her belongings.

The Ontario police confirmed that a woman with the same name filed a report alleging stalking. However, they noted that the report itself is not public record.

The LAPD initiated an investigation of its own after learning about the report.

Labrada is one of three assistant chiefs who directly report to Chief Michel Moore. He oversees the Counter-Terrorism and Special Operations Bureau, Detective Bureau, and Transit Services Bureau as the director of the Office of Special Operations.
