Individual Admits Guilt for Involvement in Burglaries at Cal State Fullerton

A 42-year-old man has pleaded guilty in a series of break-ins at Cal State Fullerton, resulting in a sentence of 90 days in jail. John Michael Nicely admitted to three counts of burglary, as well as grand theft, receiving stolen property, vandalism, and carrying a dangerous weapon on campus. He also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of possession of burglary tools and a controlled substance. As part of his sentencing, Nicely will also have to perform 10 days of Caltrans labor and will be placed on two years of formal probation.

In a separate case, Ryan Chase Bumgarner, age 36, pleaded guilty last year to similar charges. He was sentenced to two years of formal probation and 82 days in jail.

The incidents began when Cal State Fullerton police officers noticed a suspicious truck filled with equipment in a campus parking facility at 3:48 a.m. on March 3, 2021. Bumgarner and Nicely attempted to flee when they saw the police, but with assistance from Fullerton police, they were quickly apprehended.

According to Cal State Fullerton police Capt. Scot Willey, Bumgarner and Nicely are childhood friends who planned to engage in drug use and theft at the university. The duo targeted vehicles, sheds, as well as the equipment belonging to plumbers and electricians, estimated to be worth around $5,000. Investigators also recovered stolen documents that are suspected to have been used for identity theft, insurance fraud, and unemployment fraud.
