The Indiana Pacers have acquired Obi Toppin from the New York Knicks, trading away a former lottery pick who had a special place in the hearts of fans but didn’t quite earn the same level of favor with Coach Tom Thibodeau.

According to a person with knowledge of the details, the Knicks will receive two second-round picks in return for Toppin. The trade is not yet official and the person spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

ESPN first reported the trade.

Toppin, who was selected as the eighth overall pick in the 2020 draft, showed promise after winning the national player of the year award at Dayton. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, his development was hindered as the season was cut short and his professional debut was delayed.

Playing behind All-Star Julius Randle also limited Toppin’s opportunities for playing time, resulting in just 15 starts in three seasons with the Knicks.

Despite the fans’ desire to see more of Toppin, showcased by their chants at Madison Square Garden, he was never given significant playing time. His highest scoring average came in the 2021-22 season, with 9.0 points per game.

While Toppin would have been eligible for a contract extension, the trade allows the Knicks to avoid making that decision.

Toppin’s standout game of the season occurred in the regular-season finale against the Pacers, where he started the final five games in place of the injured Randle. In that loss, Toppin scored a season-high 34 points and tied his season-best with seven rebounds.
