Apple, Alphabet, and Microsoft CEOs had an opportunity to engage with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the US for a meeting with President Biden and other political and business leaders.

The tech company executives spent over an hour with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House, discussing investment opportunities and challenges in India. Prior to this, Prime Minister Modi also met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

After the meeting, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that India presents a “huge opportunity,” and referenced the two retail stores the company recently opened in India. This visit marked Prime Minister Modi’s first state visit to the US since taking office in 2014. Following the meeting, it was announced that Google will be collaborating with the Indian Institute of Science on open sourcing speech data for artificial intelligence models.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was present for the event and had discussions with Prime Minister Modi regarding potential collaborations in the field of artificial intelligence. Hemant Taneja, CEO of venture capital firm General Catalyst, also attended the meeting, expressing his intention to align efforts to streamline technology transfer rules between the US and India, given India’s status as the world’s most populous country and the increasing strain on US-China relations.

Large semiconductor companies like Micron and Applied Materials took the opportunity of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to announce plans for significant investments in India. Micron plans to open a facility in Modi’s home state of Gujarat, as the chip industry looks to diversify its supply chain. Additionally, Lam Research revealed plans to train 60,000 Indian engineers.

However, American businesses face challenges in India due to limited access to highly skilled labor and outdated labor laws. Kenneth Juster, former US Ambassador to India and current distinguished fellow at the Council for Foreign Relations, acknowledged these challenges but remains optimistic. He stated that India has pledged to ease the process for foreign companies to do business in the country.
