Increased Number of Texas Migrants Land in Los Angeles

A fifth bus carrying migrants from Texas arrived in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, according to an announcement from Mayor Karen Bass’ office. The bus, which arrived at Union Station around 11:30 AM PT, is part of a plan that was set in motion earlier this year, involving various city departments, nonprofit organizations, and faith partners.

Specific details about the latest arrivals have yet to be released.

Prior to Saturday’s arrival, the most recent bus arrived on Tuesday, originating from Brownsville, Texas, and also arriving at Union Station. According to the L.A. Welcome Collective, the migrants on that bus came from Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Venezuela.

The L.A. Welcome Collective, which consists of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice, Central American Resource Center-Los Angeles, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, Esperanza Immigration Rights Project, and Immigrant Defenders Law Center, issued a statement expressing their commitment to work with the city and county of Los Angeles to receive and assist asylum seekers. They emphasized the importance of treating every person with dignity and respect, regardless of their immigration status, and striving to integrate immigrants into society. They also acknowledged the need to address the flaws in the immigration system.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently described his state’s border region as “overrun” and hinted at the possibility of more shipments of immigrants. He criticized President Biden for failing to secure the border and pointed out that migrants are drawn to major cities like Los Angeles, especially after it declared itself a sanctuary city. Abbott pledged to continue providing relief to the border communities until the issue is addressed.

In June, the Los Angeles City Council passed a motion to draft a “Sanctuary City” ordinance that would prevent the use of city resources, property, or personnel for federal immigration enforcement.
