Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. previously clashed at the box office in 2008 when Universal’s “Mamma Mia!” went head-to-head against Nolan’s critically acclaimed “The Dark Knight” in July of that year.
Thanks to Heath Ledger’s iconic performance as the Joker, Warner Bros.’ Batman sequel had a strong opening weekend, surpassing the musical rom-com “Mamma Mia!”. However, both films were massive successes, with “The Dark Knight” earning over $1 billion at the box office and “Mamma Mia!” bringing in more than $600 million.
