Increased Migration from Texas to Los Angeles

Union Station in downtown Los Angeles welcomed another group of migrants from Texas on Thursday, marking the sixth arrival since June 14.

The bus arrived at approximately 8:50 a.m., as confirmed by Mayor Karen Bass’ office. According to spokesman Zach Seidl, the city has been collaborating with various departments, non-profit organizations, and faith partners to implement a plan formulated earlier this year. Seidl stated, “Upon learning about the bus yesterday, we promptly activated our prepared plan.”

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) stated that the group consisted of 15 men, eight women, and 13 children between the ages of 2 and 17. The migrants were taken to St. Anthony’s Croatian Church, where city officials and immigrant-support groups provided an orientation session and immediate humanitarian assistance such as food, water, clothing, hygiene kits, and legal immigration guidance. Additionally, CHIRLA mentioned that efforts would be made to connect these asylum-seekers with their loved ones, family members, or sponsors in the region.

CHIRLA officials disclosed that the migrants seeking asylum came from Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela, with the majority coming from Mexico and Venezuela.

This latest group of migrants brings the total number bused from Texas to Los Angeles to 234, according to CHIRLA. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been overseeing the transportation of migrants from Brownsville, Texas to California, citing overwhelming immigration across the Mexican border in the state’s border region.

Abbott expressed in a statement, “Texas’ small border towns remain overwhelmed and overrun by the thousands of people illegally crossing into Texas from Mexico because of President Biden’s refusal to secure the border. Los Angeles is a major city that migrants seek to go to, particularly now that its city leaders approved its self-declared sanctuary city status. Our border communities are on the front lines of President Biden’s border crisis, and Texas will continue providing this much-needed relief until he steps up to do his job and secure the border.”

The Los Angeles City Council passed a motion in June, unanimously directing the city to develop a “Sanctuary City” ordinance, which, once enacted, would prevent the utilization of city resources, property, or personnel for federal immigration enforcement.
