Increased Drone Patrols Implemented off Long Island’s Coast Following Recent Shark Attacks

  • Drones are being utilized by Long Island authorities to patrol the shores in search of sharks.
  • These patrols have been implemented following a series of shark bite incidents on various beaches, including a sighting of 50 sharks.
  • In just two days, five individuals reported being injured from shark bites in separate encounters.

Authorities are employing drones to patrol the waters surrounding Long Island beaches, in response to a concerning series of suspected shark attacks that resulted in five swimmers being injured within a span of just two days.

The Suffolk County Police Department announced in their statement on Thursday that their Marine Bureau and Aviation Section have intensified patrols of local beaches by employing drones for an aerial perspective of the waterways.

As previously reported by Insider, a 15-year-old boy was bitten while surfing near Fire Island on July 3. On the same day, a 15-year-old girl sustained three puncture wounds on her leg after swimming off the coast of Robert Moses State Park, as reported by News 12 New York.

In separate incidents on July 4, two men in their 40s and a woman were also bitten in close proximity, according to a report by CNN. Fortunately, all the injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.

Robert Moses Beach was temporarily closed on July 4 for over an hour after officials observed a school of 50 sharks swimming near the shore. Subsequently, these sharks were identified as sand tiger sharks, as highlighted by the Shark Research Institute. Although sand tiger sharks may appear intimidating to swimmers, they are typically known for their “placid” temperament and usually only bite humans when provoked.

The police department urged beachgoers to remain vigilant in the water and to promptly exit the water and inform a lifeguard or local official if they spot a shark or a group of baitfish that may attract predators.
