According to newly released statistics by the UK government, England has seen a surge in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in 2022, with significant increases in gonorrhoea, syphilis, and chlamydia. The largest number of cases of gonorrhoea since records began were diagnosed, with 83,000 cases across all age groups. Syphilis diagnoses are also at their highest level since 1948. The figures reflect record-low numbers in 2020 and 2021, in part due to decreased testing during the pandemic. The highest STI diagnosis rates were recorded among younger people, with diagnoses increasing by 26.5% among 15- to 24-year-olds, and cases of gonorrhoea nearly doubling. Although chlamydia remains the STI most frequently diagnosed in the UK, with almost 200,000 cases recorded, it can lead to health complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, if left untreated. Efforts to prevent STI infections include promoting the use of condoms and vaccines. The UK faces obstacles with increasing antimicrobial resistance to many antibiotics used to treat STIs.
