North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has issued an order for factories to significantly increase missile production. The aim is to ensure preparedness for any potential conflict with adversaries, as reported by state media on Monday.
During his visit to munitions factories, including one that manufactures tactical missiles, on August 11 and 12, Kim set a crucial objective to dramatically enhance the existing missile production capacity. This is to meet the demands of military units on the frontlines, according to a report by KCNA.
Kim also emphasized the urgent need to boost shell production in order to meet the increased operational demand of the army and deploy more shells to frontline units. KCNA reported that Kim stated, “The Korean People’s Army must possess an overwhelmingly powerful military force and be fully prepared to respond to any war at any moment, preventing the enemy from daring to use their armed forces. If an attack is launched, the enemy must be surely annihilated.”
This focus on increasing missile production comes at a time of escalating tensions between North Korea and the allied United States and South Korea. The Ulchi Freedom Guardian summer exercises, described as the largest scale ever, will commence on the following Monday and continue until August 31. These exercises consist of approximately 30 field training programs and involve the mobilization of tens of thousands of troops from both countries, according to a news conference report.
“The exercises are crucial for maintaining a strong combined defense posture in case of emergency, which is essential to counter the growing military threat from North Korea,” stated South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson Colonel Lee Sung-jun during a briefing.
Kim has consistently criticized war drills and recently signed an order to implement important military measures to strengthen North Korea’s preparedness for war.
