In Support of the Importance of Coming-of-Age: An Opinion Piece by Inquirer

The concept of “coming-of-age” has always fascinated me. When discussing this topic, my mind immediately goes to the numerous youth-oriented films that explore the journey to adulthood. One of my personal favorites in this genre is “Moonrise Kingdom” directed by Wes Anderson. These movies often present an idealized version of youth and growing up, showcasing teenage angst and the pursuit of adventure, love, loss, and self-discovery. Music also plays a significant role in my understanding of coming-of-age. The songs by artists like Clairo, Tyler, the Creator, and Lorde have become the soundtrack of my teenage years. These artists, many of whom are underground or indie, capture the essence of coming-of-age in their music. However, the concept of coming-of-age has recently come under scrutiny, and rightly so. The portrayal of a privileged, America-centric model of coming-of-age in mainstream media may be unattainable for many teenagers who do not have the same opportunities. Despite this, the essence of coming-of-age remains unique to each individual. The teenage experience varies greatly based on factors such as social class, race, gender, sexuality, and external events. Growing up in the midst of social, political, and environmental turmoil in the 21st century is a truly transformative experience. Personally, I do believe in the concept of coming-of-age, although not necessarily in the same way as depicted in films like “The Breakfast Club” or “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. To me, coming-of-age is characterized by the restlessness and expansion of youth. It is a natural part of growth and development. Each coming-of-age story, whether fictional or real, revolves around the quest for balance between restlessness and tranquility. I can attest to this through my own collection of coming-of-age memories. From seemingly mundane moments like riding a tricycle with friends to significant events like parties, concerts, and personal achievements, each experience has shaped my journey towards maturity. These moments of restlessness amidst tranquility have made a lasting impact on my life. Coming-of-age is not a standardized process. It is not limited to media, literature, or art. It is a way of living life to the fullest, embracing both restlessness and tranquility. As I enter my junior year at the Ateneo de Manila Senior High School, I continue to explore and romanticize my own coming-of-age through writing, Philippine studies and politics, international relations, social studies, and of course, coming-of-age films.
