Donald Trump has made the decision to forego participating in the upcoming Republican party television debate. He expressed the sentiment that his public image is well-known. Instead, the former president will be preparing to face charges of election interference in a Georgia court on Thursday.
Despite facing four separate criminal indictments, Trump remains the clear frontrunner for the Republican party nomination. Many Republicans seem more fascinated by the alleged crimes and misconduct committed by Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden, rather than focusing on the charges against Trump.
Trump has consistently claimed that President Biden’s son is a criminal. His attempts to implicate Hunter Biden in corruption led to his first impeachment as president. Trump was accused of withholding military aid to Ukraine in order to pressure the Ukrainian government into announcing an investigation into Hunter Biden’s business dealings in the country.
Undeterred by this experience, Trump continued to mention Hunter Biden at every opportunity, even in his speech to supporters on January 6, 2021, shortly before they stormed Congress. Many influential Republicans have followed Trump’s lead, not only alleging Hunter Biden’s corruption but also suggesting a direct connection to President Biden himself. Kevin McCarthy, the Speaker of the House, has referred to it as “Biden family corruption.”
The underlying political motive behind these claims is clear. Trump aims to portray the Biden family as the true criminals while positioning himself as the victim of a corrupt conspiracy orchestrated by the Biden White House. Unfortunately, too many Republicans are willing to indulge Trump’s conspiracy theories instead of challenging them.
However, despite the Republican party’s politicization of the Hunter Biden case, it doesn’t mean there is nothing worth investigating. There are indications that the president’s son received exorbitant payments as a board member of a Ukrainian company called Burisma while his father served as vice-president and was responsible for US-Ukrainian relations. Hunter Biden was also willing to make use of his father’s name and allegedly even put him on speakerphone to impress his business contacts. While this may not have been illegal, it certainly lacked integrity.
So far, the Hunter Biden case has generated substantial controversy, but the actual charges against him, which he already faces and were part of an unsuccessful plea bargain, pertain to his failure to file tax returns and his possession of a firearm while being a drug user. The Department of Justice has recently appointed a special counsel to investigate the allegations surrounding Hunter Biden. Additionally, Republicans in Congress are likely to conduct their own investigations.
Despite years of intense allegations, no concrete evidence of serious crimes related to Hunter Biden has emerged. However, it is conceivable that the special counsel or a congressional investigation may uncover new and incriminating evidence. Given the political sensitivity of these cases and the Republicans’ repeated claims of a double standard, a thorough investigation of all allegations is necessary.
Even if new charges arise against Hunter Biden, they would not support Trump’s implausible argument of his own victimhood. Attempting to undermine the results of a presidential election, which is the gravest accusation against Trump, carries far greater moral and legal significance compared to Hunter Biden’s business dealings, tax returns, and gun ownership.
