Improbable, a SoftBank-backed company, unveils an ambitious vision for MSquared metaverse

Herman Narula, the co-founder and CEO of Improbable, spoke at the Web Summit in Lisbon about the company’s plans for a network of metaverses. Improbable aims to create a network of virtual worlds that can accommodate thousands of users and compete with platforms like Meta and Microsoft. The company released a white paper introducing MSquared, a collection of interoperable Web3 metaverses where people can live, work, and interact virtually. MSquared, a separate entity from Improbable, raised $150 million from investors last year.

Improbable has enlisted the help of technical partners like Google, Nvidia, and Ubitus to provide the necessary cloud infrastructure, pixel streaming, and audio/video technology to create immersive and accessible metaverse experiences. The goal is to make the metaverse easily accessible through cloud streaming, eliminating the need to download any software. Improbable has also provided developer tools to enable programmers to build their own metaverses using their Morpheus technology. This technology has previously allowed Improbable to host 4,500 players.

The participants in the MSquared network will be divided into four categories: metaverse owners, content creators, service providers, and users. Metaverse owners are entities building the metaverse, while content creators produce experiences and objects within it. Service providers offer storage and computing power, and users consume the content and visit the metaverses. Improbable plans to expand MSquared’s accessibility to mobile devices and consoles by the end of the year.

Herman Narula emphasized that MSquared can function independently of Improbable. While Improbable is currently heavily involved, the goal is for other partners and developers to take the lead in the future. This approach ensures that users, developers, and brands do not feel tied exclusively to Improbable. However, to ensure the success of MSquared, the company needs brands to create experiences using its technology. Improbable plans to announce its first partner, a major sports brand, in the coming weeks.

Improbable faces competition from Meta, Microsoft, Roblox, and Epic Games, all of whom are developing their own metaverses. Improbable, founded by Cambridge computer science students Narula and Rob Whitehead, initially focused on gaming with partnerships to develop constantly rendering mass multiplayer online games. However, the company later shifted its focus to deals with military and defense departments before selling off its defense portfolio.

Improbable takes a different approach from Meta and Microsoft by not requiring a headset for its metaverse experiences. The software will be desktop-based, and the company aims to create a more decentralized metaverse where users can exchange goods directly across different platforms. Improbable is supportive of digital assets like nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and may even launch its own digital token. However, some aspects of the metaverse will require centralized controls to prevent abuse.

To address concerns about the social and ethical implications of the metaverse, Improbable has launched a think tank to explore the subject. Overall, Improbable aims to foster innovative and interactive entertainment experiences through the metaverse, drawing inspiration from successful examples like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite.
