Implications of QB Matt Corral and WR Jalen Reagor’s Potential Addition to the Patriots Offense

Despite the potential that some may see in Corral, his accuracy when throwing to moving receivers is a major concern. In one instance, he correctly identifies a double post-cross play but overshoots the target. In another clip, his throw is well behind the intended receiver despite making the right read during a bootleg action.

Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien now has an opportunity to develop a quarterback prospect with a higher ceiling than the current backup options on the New England roster. If O’Brien can fix Corral’s mechanics and improve his consistency in downfield throws, it presents an intriguing gamble and one that the Patriots should consider.

The Patriots should pursue these opportunities because they already have a reliable backup in Zappe, and even Mac Jones leans more towards being a distributor rather than a playmaker. However, Corral still has a long way to go, and despite the potential, he might not be the active backup for the first few weeks.

While Zappe has faced struggles in training camp, he had the advantage of familiarity with O’Brien’s system during the spring and summer. On the other hand, the coaching staff will need to spend time getting Corral up to speed before he’s ready to support Mac Jones as the backup.

PATRIOTS SIGN WR JALEN REAGOR TO PRACTICE SQUAD

In addition, the Patriots have reportedly added former first-round wide receiver Jalen Reagor to their practice squad.

Similar to Corral, Reagor initially made the Vikings’ 53-man roster but was then waived after Minnesota signed running back Myles Gaskin and offensive lineman David Quessenbery. Following his release, Reagor reportedly reached an agreement with the Patriots to join their practice squad. There are indications that he may be promoted for Week 1.

Unfortunately, Reagor has been considered one of the biggest disappointments among first-round wide receiver picks in recent years. Drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 21st overall pick in 2020, the 24-year-old has only managed 73 catches in three seasons. Reagor has struggled with drops, contested catches, and route-running, preventing him from reaching his full potential. Despite his impressive athleticism and speed, Reagor has yet to find success in the NFL.
